HOW EARLY SNOWFALLS CHANGED THE ROAD SALT INDUSTRY THIS SEASON

This winter, from November 2016 to February 2017 in Southern Ontario, we’ve seen more precipitation of snow earlier on in the season compared to last year. The fact that the snowfall this season has happened in more sporadic mild patches as opposed to the few major snowstorms we experienced last year has shifted the way snow removal companies in the road salt industry were able to do business this season.

For road salt suppliers, whether there’s 2 centimeters or 20 centimeters of snow, road salt is in demand and necessary to keep the roads and walkways safe. The amount of road salt supply is based more on the frequency of precipitation than the quantity of snowfall. Typically, a lot more salt is needed for mild but more frequent snowfalls than a few major snowstorms. So, you can imagine that by mid-winter this season, with little but frequent snowfall, rock salt supply is more sparse than last season.

Draglam Salt is Ontario’s supplier of choice for bulk and bagged salt services to many major snow removal organizations. Being in the business, we’ve seen the price of road salt fluctuate based on supply, demand, and other factors determined by the mines. Road salt shortages can occur from time to time, depending on the season and when this occurs it is possible to see higher than normal costs.

Draglam Salt works to the best of its ability to offer reasonable pricing for bulk salt services. Our goal is to work with our customers during the period of time between snowfalls, to determine an adequate supply of road salt they’ll need to keep their business going through to the end of the season. Since weather can be very unpredictable, we’ve made it our priority to ensure that our loyal customers are able to obtain their road salt delivery through our 24-hour emergency line.

Pre-ordering for next season is the best way to prepare your business for whatever the season may bring. By pre-ordering, you are able to maintain priority for next season should we experience a shortage of road salt, thus protecting your business through the winter season.
